SP5.11 A systematic review of participant descriptors reported in studies of small bowel obstruction

Abstract Aim Reporting of participant descriptors in studies small bowel obstruction (SBO) can help identify characteristics associated with favourable outcomes and allow comparison other real-world clinical populations. The aim was to the pattern reported assessing interventions for SBO. Method This systematic review registered PROSPERO (CRD42021281031) line PRISMA checklist. Systematic searches Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were undertaken operative non-operative adults Studies dual screened inclusion. Descriptors categorised into conceptual domains by research team. Results Searches identified 2648 studies, which 85 included. A total 168 unique identified. On average, 12 descriptors. most frequently sex, age, SBO aetiology, history abdominal surgery, BMI ASA classification. highest number a single study 34, compared lowest one. Pathway factors least described domain. Overall, 43 just one study. Conclusion There is lack consistency Furthermore, significant proportion used infrequently. makes it challenging assess whether participants are representative wider population. Further work required develop Core Descriptor Set standardise reporting patient reduce heterogeneity between studies.
